It was a welcome breakthrough for WRC fans when the FIA Promoter announced they would recommend New Zealand be readmitted after an eight year gap into the WRC calendar, which in 2020 was not going to include Rally Australia.
The FIA are working on reintroducing an event rotation system, hoping to keep established WRC events such as Australia, Spain and France (Corsica) within the FIA’s longer term WRC framework.
First week in September 2020 was reserved for the NZ event. Already some initial plans have been announced for Rally NZ.
The three-day event is again to be based in Auckland, comprising two legs in the Greater Auckland area, with a third day held further south on popular stages in the Waikato region.
Peter "PJ" Johnston remains as event Chairman, while the sporting entrepreneur Michael Goldstein is the event’s CEO.
Goldstein says: “The event is owned by Rally New Zealand. We are now working with ATEED (Auckland Tourism Events & Economic Development). Auckland is New Zealand’s biggest city and this has certainly been a feature of our discussions with the WRC Promoter.
"Our requirement will be to have two of the three days of the rally within the Auckland district, which extends well outside of the city itself. At the moment negotiations are on a one-off basis for 2020.”
WRC Promoter personnel visited New Zealand recently for talks with the event organisers, sharing ideas.
Auckland is committed to running the America’s Cup races in 2021 which will attract attention from potential commercial partners.
