History was created in round two of the Victorian Rally Championship yesterday when two Ford Escorts finished equal first - to the second. After the demise of early favourite Arron Windus with mechanical problems, the Escort RS1800s of Luke Sytema and Justin Walker engaged in a ding-dong battle. An hour an 27 minutes of competition later in the Ada River Rally, they couldn't be separated. It's believed to be the first rear-wheel drive win in a Victorian Rally Championship round since 1994. Wet and slippery conditions should have suited the four-wheel drive cars, but the best of those was Warren Lee in third place in a Lancer Evo 9.

Steven Porter's Mazda RX7 was fourth, while the Ford Fiesta of Stephen Raymond rounded out the top five. In the adjoining Victorian Club Rally Championship round, it was another Escort victory, this time with Cody Richards at the wheel. A further report on the Ada River Rally will follow.
