FIA President, Jean Todt, has announced that the Safari Rally in Kenya has become an official WRC candidate event. An agreement between the Government of Kenya and the WRC promoter was signed in Paris at the Automobile Club de France. Todt commented: ”I hope that will encourage the development of Motor Sport and Road Safety in Africa.” Recognition as Candidate Status is far from confirmation that the event is to be included in the WRC calendar in the immediate future, even if this status strengthens the FIA’s political standing in the African continent. Despite the inspection of many intervening events, this year’s Rally of Turkey is the first new or revived event in the WRC for eight years.
