FIA Stewards query Skoda’s homologation compliance

The official results for Wales Rally GB were only finally published on Sunday night at 23h00, more than ten hours after the final stage of the rally, following an enquiry by officials into the homologation compliance of the works entered Skoda Fabia R5 of the WRC2 winner Esapekka Lappi.

The crankshaft position sensor fitted on the car was found not to comply with the homologated part.   Skoda Motorsport’s Technical Director Ales Rada said the same piece had been fitted to all the cars they have sold (believed to be around 100). 

The Stewards believed the wrong technical pictures had been supplied to the FIA.  The team was fined Euros 10,000 for not complying with the homologation form while the team running Suninen (Team Oreca) were fined Euro 1000. 

Neither competitor incurred any sporting penalty.   Suninen is now equal on points with the series leader Evans. 

The championship will now be decided by the results of Rally Australia where of the drivers still in WRC2 contention, only Lappi can increase his points total. 

Lappi is currently third, 13 points behind Evans and Suninen.
