The Australian Rally Championship's 2020 tyre regulations could be announced within a week, according to CAMS' Michael Smith. However, the Director of Motorsport and Commercial Operations at the governing body told RallySport Magazine that a final decision had still not been made. "It's very close, but we're still not certain which way we'll go," Smith said. Earlier this year, CAMS offered the option for a manufacturer to apply to be the sole control tyre supplier for next year's ARC, or to join the championship as one of up to six 'official tyre suppliers'. "It's not an easy decision to make. We've got some really good options on the table, and need to balance any commercial return for promotion against the best thing from a sporting point of view," Smith explained. "We're still waiting on some detail from some of the tenders – just a few finer details – but our options are strong and I think we should have a decision within a week." Smith added that while the ultimate decision is his, he will take advice from the sport's major stakeholders. For the past six years, the ARC has run a controlled tyre on all cars, first through Kumho, and for the past three years with MRF Tyres.
