After the year long battle between the Rookie Series competitors it all comes down to the final round at the Dimension 1 Rally of Oberon.
The series has been hotly contested this year, with the crews in the running for prize money at each event thanks to the generous support of naming rights sponsor, Race Brakes Sydney, crews have been putting everything on the line to get to the top of the leader board.
The series started at the first round as part of the Specialised Brake and Clutch Service Jenolan Rallysprint, with the crew of Glenn Watman in his Ford Escort taking out top points for the rookie series ahead of John Bermingham in a Datsun Sunny and Darren McGuire in a Datsun 1600 in 3rd, with Glenn’s brother Bruce taking out the navigators points ahead of Scott McGuire and Ava Hancock who navigated for her brother Ian in a Datsun 1200 finishing as the 3rd place Navigator.
The crews then took on the fast flowing roads of the Holmwood & Cowra Wreckers Cowra Shire Rally. Again it was the Watman brothers taking out top spots in the driver and navigators points, with Nikko Kouriefs in his Datsun 1600 following Glen Watman to be second placed driver ahead of Tim Joass in a Holden Gemini in 3rd finishing only 1 point ahead of Tom Clarke in 4th in another Datsun 1600. For the navigators it was Lance Dye in 2nd behind Bruce Watman and Darren Lea in 3rd.
For the 3rd and penultimate round of the Rookie Series crews headed to the City of Orange Classic Forest Rally.
The challenging conditions proved to be a good test of car and driver, with Ian Hancock in a Datsun 1200 taking top points over Mark Gallagher in a Suzuki Baleno in 2nd, Glenn Watman finished 3rd on points only 1 point a head of Darren McGuire in 4th. For the Navigators it was Ava Hancock in 1st, Jason Gallagher in 2nd and Bruce Watman in 3rd.
So after 3 rounds the table looks like this:-
Drivers         Points      Navigators   Points
Glenn Watman   155       Bruce   Watman   165
Ian Hancock      84        Ava    Hancock   101
Nikko Kouriefs   79        Scott   McGuire   99
Darren McGuire  68        Sarah    Denmead   78
Tim Joass         68        Jason   Gallagher   72
With a maximum potential points haul of 70 achievable, several drivers and navigators could take the crown for 2010. This should make the competition get even hotter at the Dimension 1 Rally of Oberon.
