India's biggest motorsport star, Gaurav Gill, is set to make his much-awaited World Rally Championship debut in 2018.
According to reports in the Indian media, the three-time Asia Pacific Rally Champion will contest seven rounds of the WRC's WRC2 Championship this year, most likely driving a Skoda Fabia R5.
"The Indian is on a strict regimen to reduce his weight and get fit and 'is on the lookout for funding'," the report said.
"I will be announcing the launch and the sponsor at an official event soon," Gill is quoted as saying.
Gaurav Gill won the 2017 APRC title for Team MRF in a Skoda Fabia R5.
Gill has recently been co-driven by Australian Glenn Macneall and Belgian Stephane Prevot, and has long targeted the WRC as the most logical next step in his career.
However, a lack of funding and opportunity has always hampered those plans.
His performances in the Asia Pacific Rally Championship over recent years have shown that he has world class speed. Now, he may have the opportunity to show that on a more global stage.
