Honda Australia are hoping to contest next year’s Australian Rally Championship after a sensational performance by British driver Guy Wilks at the Coffs Coast Rally last weekend.

Having already contested the Rally of Canberra in May, Wilks drove the front-wheel drive Honda Civic Type R to second place in Heat 1, and was lying third in Heat 2 before rolling out of the event.

Honda would love to enter the full ARC in 2009, but according to Mark Higgins, Honda’s National Public Relations Manager, the final decision is still a good month away.

“Honda definitely have the desire and the passion to compete in next year’s Australian Rally Championship,” Higgins told www.rallysportmag.com.au today.

“However, with the economic downturn in the past two months, the market has changed somewhat, so we need to sit down between now and Christmas and work things out.”

Higgins admitted that Honda would love to have Wilks drive a car in next year’s ARC, however if, as predicted, the Brit lands a Subaru World Rally Team drive in the 2009 WRC, he would most likely be unavailable.

“There are a lot of very, very talented drivers and co-drivers in Australia, so there’s plenty to choose from,” Higgins added.

“As I said, Honda have the desire and the passion to compete in the ARC. The crowds at Coffs Harbour were definitely pleased with the performance and the sound of the Civic Type R, so hopefully we’ll be involved in 2009.”

He said that at this stage there had been no discussions as to whether the company would run one or two cars.
