Three weeks ago, Leigh Hynes and Stuart Percival surprised everyone, including themselves, when they turned a 20 second deficit into a win at the Newmont Boddington Gold Rally.
This weekend, the boys say they’ll take a slightly more cautious approach to round four of the WA Rally Championship (WARC), the Experts Cup Rally in the pine plantations around Collie.
Hynes explained: “At this stage, we’re really focussing on winning the 2014 championship rather than winning every event.”
The Busselton Rally Sport team is 14 points ahead on the leader board after taking maximum points from rounds two and three of the WARC.
This year, Hynes and Percival are gunning for their fourth joint championship. Their longer term goal is to win six titles and become WA’s most successful rallying partnership.
The Experts Cup Rally is one of the most challenging events of the WARC season with its high speed sections and tight junctions through the Wellington Dam precinct.
It’s also one of Hynes’ favourite events: “We’ve had some great runs in Collie and we’ve come home with the win for the past three years in a row.”
Busselton Rally Sport’s Subaru WRX has had some mechanical improvements ahead of the Experts Cup Rally and will also be fitted with new QVEE LED spotlights.
“These LED’s give off an incredible amount of pure white light with a much greater distance over the light bars that are quite popular now.” Hynes explained
“We have LRT Custom engineering making the mounting hardware with their water cutter so they’ll fit into the bonnet pods.”
“The officials and spectators better have their sunglasses ready when we approach,” he joked.
The Experts Cup Rally starts at 1.30pm in Collie this Saturday.
