Leigh Hynes and Stuart Percival have dominated round five of the WA Rally Championship, the LRT Custom Engineering Lewana Stages.
The Busselton Rally Sport pair won all six stages of the event and finished a massive three minutes and 20 seconds ahead of their nearest rivals.
Hynes said Saturday’s event was the toughest Lewana Stages rally he had ever competed in.
His driving skills were tested over the muddy and slippery Kirup roads and the arduous conditions left no room for error.
“Some parts of the road had grip, but in other places there was none,” he said. “I’m glad we had the DMACK tyres to rely on.”
Before hitting the stages, Hynes’ service team cut full mud grooves into their Subaru WRX’s tyres, a move the reigning WA Rally Champion believes gave his team a big advantage.
Hynes said he was thrilled to give DMACK their first WA rally win and added: “Hopefully there will be many more.”
The LRT Custom Engineering Lewana Stages was also a chance for the Busselton Rally Sport team to test their new QVEE LED lights and Hynes reported the pure white light they produced was ‘exceptional’.
Following the win, which put Hynes and Percival within striking distance of the 2014 WA Rally Championship, Hynes also thanked LRT Custom Engineering for the new lower control arm they built for the WRX. It replaced the one that was bent when the steering broke at the Experts Cup Rally.
“The work LRT did was awesome,” he said.
There’s now a two and a half month wait until the final round of the WA Rally Championship, the roughest and toughest event on the calendar, the Carringtons Traffic Services Safari. Hynes said
he’ll use the down time to further improve the performance and reliability of his car.
