The Busselton Rally Sport team’s quest for a fourth WA Rally Championship (WARC) title comes down to the final event of the 2014 season, the Carringtons Traffic Services Safari, this Saturday.
The event, held on gravel roads around Chidlow and Mundaring, is well known to the be roughest and toughest of the season and Leigh Hynes and Stuart Percival say they’ll approach it with a sense of caution.
“We’re going to concentrate on a solid finish rather than winning this one,” Hynes said.
But don’t take that as an indication they’ll be off the pace.
“I’ll certainly drive at 100 per cent where it’s safe to do so, but I’ll back off for the really rough bits,” the reigning WARC driver explained.
“The thing about the Safari Rally is there are some smooth, fast-flowing sections where you can get a good pace going, but then you turn off into a narrow track where it’s just rough.”
The Busselton Rally Sport team’s Subaru WRX has been specifically set up to accommodate the ruts and rocks.
The car has also been fitted with new tyres from Performance Racegear. Hynes and Percival will be the first WA competitors to run the new DMACK G62s.
The boys sit in second spot on the leaderboard by eight points but remain the strongest contenders for the championship given they have taken the most outright wins of the season. The final result is calculated as the best of five out of six scores.
“Winning the championship will be a tribute to the backing we’ve received this year from our supporters, in particular WA Freemasons, True Blue Alarms and QVEE,” Hynes said.
The event starts in Chidlow at midday on Saturday.
