Team Hyundai Rallye are looking to resurrect the team’s 2008 title hopes at this weekend’s Rally of the Hastings at Port Macquarie.

After a disappointing retirement with electrical problems at Lithgow in April, the crew head to Port ready to do battle in the 2008 NSW State Championship.

Driver Mick Gillett and co-driver Harvey Smith will race their factory Hyundai Accent in the 2008 ‘one-make’ Race Brakes NSW Hyundai Excel Rally Series at Port Macquarie. The team has been thorough in their preparation after an electrical connector let the team down at Lithgow.

“It’s not much fun sitting in the forest in the dark, with a car that won’t start when it’s cold and the navigator is too ugly the cuddle,” Gillett said. “It’s the first time in four years the Hyundai has not finished a rally, but it was a non factory component that let us down.”

The Rally in the Hastings was a late change to the rally calendar after the traditional June long weekend Bega Rally was cancelled. Team Hyundai Rallye will be joined by seven other Hyundai Excels at Port with series leader Glenn Farrant and new Excel competitor, Stephen Horobin, who are likely to be the pace setters.

As with Gillett, Farrant and Horobin did not compete at Port in 2007 so road knowledge is not expected to play a part in the outcome, although with the current rain forecast for this week road position may make the difference.

Hyundai Motor Company Australia’s Accent rally car feature in marketing communications for the Hyundai Genuine Parts Program and the team continually test the reliability of Hyundai Genuine Parts.

With almost forty Hyundais competing across Australia in these state-based one-make rally series, Hyundai is showing the way forward with affordable technology in Australia’s toughest proving ground - rallying.
