Rally fans with a sense of history got a real surprise at last weekend's Bega Valley Rally when an ex-works Lancia Rallye 037 appeared.

The car, which has been imported to Australia by Gerry Duyvestyn, gave a demonstration run over one of the spectator stages at Bega.

Resplendent in its original Martini Lancia colours, the rear-engined, super-charged 037 is likely to appear at the Alpine Rally in Victoria in November.

Duyvestyn, and co-driver Ian Buddery, ran a similarly historic Lancia Stratos in the Alpine Rally in 2005, but have now 'updated' to the newer Lancia Rallye 037.

It's a car that is certain to bring spectators out onto the stages.
