M-Sport chief Malcolm Wilson confirmed before Wales Rally GB that WRC team decisions should not be far away.
“It is still work in progress. Ideally we would like to run three cars, the target is to try and run three,” Wilson said.
“At this point in time I haven't made the announcement because this is what I am trying to find financial solutions to be able to do that.
“At the moment I am not in a position to be where I want to be as much as I'd like to be. I am pretty confident it is going to be decided earlier than we have been in previous years, so that is a positive step.
“Maybe towards some time next week, hopefully middle towards the end of next week. Hopefully we can maybe be a bit clearer on what we are doing.”
