WRC team M-Sport has reacted to the clamour from fans wanting Rally Sweden to relocate the FIA’s only fully winter WRC event.
“We need to be careful that we don’t jump to conclusions and make snap decisions on how we avoid the issues we could be forced with next week," a team spokesperson said.
"Although many people will say 'let’s just go to Arctic Rally, Canada or move further North', in reality the work behind doing that is huge and finding the necessary sponsors, funding, and infrastructure to host the WRC is not a simple task.
“If it is seen that global warming is a contributing factor to losing winter rallying then we, as a sport, must try our best to reduce our impact on the environment – something we are all already involved in.
"But we also need to remember that it is not just motorsport that is a contributing factor to anything specific – the problem is much, much wider than just our sport, but we all have to work together to ensure we do not lose what is an iconic image and scenery renowned within the sport.”
