The 2016 Mitta Mountain Rally, to be conducted by the North Eastern Car Club in association with the Albury Wodonga and District Car Club, will fill a gap created on 14 May as the third round of the 2016 Focus on Furniture Victorian Rally Championship. It will also include a separate event - the Mitta Mountain Masters, catering for classic cars over thirty years old, and recognising the most successful classic drivers and co-drivers in their 40’s, 50’s, 60’s and over 70’s.
The event will be blind (no pacenotes), with only four stages of 30-40 kilometre distance each and no repeats, looping out of the small town of Mitta Mitta which is about an hour’s drive south of Albury/Wodonga in North Eastern Victoria.
Clerk Of Course, the experienced director and competitor, Ross Runnalls, has been waiting for this opportunity to utilise the stunning roads around Mitta Mitta, nestled at the foot of Mt Bogong. Three of the four stages feature roads never known to be used before for rallying. The other was last used in its entirety in the 1975 Alpine Rally. The relentlessly twisty and technical former logging roads are in superb condition and wind their way up and down the sides of valleys, occasionally snaking along high altitude snow gum ridges, with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains.
Deputy Clerk of Course David West and Course checker Scott Spedding were genuinely excited at the roads and event concept after driving the proposed stages this week.
Social activities in the newly revamped Mitta Pub are planned before and after the event, as not everyone is there just for serious competition.
The brand new Multi Purpose Centre at the Mitta Recreation Reserve will provide an excellent dining and relaxation hub for the Service Park. Servicing will take place on the adjacent fairway of the first hole of the local golf course.
There is plenty of basic accommodation in the valley taking in Eskdale and the former dam construction village of Dartmouth, both only 15 kilometres from Mitta Mitta. It will also be possible to fly into Mitta for those disinclined to drive.
This promises to be another memorable Runnalls event. Mark it on the calendar now!
