Tomas Weng, the Swedish entrepreneur who has developed the private Mitsubishi Mirage “R5” rally car project, has finally achieved his declared ambition of having his cars accepted in official FIA championship events.

The Mitsubishi Mirage “R5” will compete in this weekend's Malaysian Rally. The entry for Jari Ketomaa in the APRC Malaysian Rally was accepted under the “ASN” provision that these cars will be accepted if they are technically approved under some national federation rules, in this case, those in Sweden.

The car has not been accepted by the FIA as a homologated car because it is a private venture not endorsed by a recognised car manufacturer.

The inclusion of “R5” in the title has been controversial and led to confusion.

Recently it was announced that a revised facelift version of the car has been introduced.

Weng’s Mpart company state their Mirage cars are not associated with the Mirage Proto cars run successfully by Janis Vorobjovs in Latvia and Lithuania.
