Whilst the current 'big names' in our sport head this weekend to Rally of Canberra, in the little known Central Queensland forest of Kalpowar, history will be made.
Murray Coote (of Australian Rally Championship fame), will reunite with the Datsun 1200 Coupe that he last campaigned in the 1987 ARC. Restored to competition spec by Dave Gaines of Cruisin Auto Spares in Nambour, this is truly a highlight of rallying in Queensland if not Australia!
Amongst a field of 24, the 'Coote in the coupe' are expected to be crowd pleasers, despite Murray only having driven the car five kilometres on bitumen prior to the event.
"Yep, feels just like it used to", was Coote's response when he climbed back in the car after 21 years.
Coote has taken a liking to the atmosphere of club rallying in Queensland. He entered last year's Northern Districts Sporting Car Club event at Yarraman, and has now entered Cap Coast Rallysport's club event for 2008. Maybe this is the way of the future - top level entrants just competing with some like minded people for a fang in the forest?!
