New regulations for classic rally cars competing in the Australian Rally Championship are expected to be approved at a meeting of the Australian Rally Commission (ARCom) on Monday.

Thompson400Dave Thompson's classic Ford Falcon in action. In an interview with RallySport Magazine’s weekly podcast, classic rallying advocate, Dave Thompson, said that the new rules would encourage more classic cars to enter events and would be a benefit to the national championship.

“The new regulations will allow more classic cars to compete than at the present time,” Thompson said.

“A new modified classics class will allow cars like Datsuns with 2.4 litre engines and twin cam motors to compete, as long as they retain the look of the classics.

“There will also be another class for cars of historical significance, such as Group B replicas and some of the other outstanding vehicles we have in Australia.”

Along with the current classic car rules, this will bring the number of classic classes to three.

Thompson was also adamant that the ARC needs the classic cars competing in their events, and that the championship was not functioning very well in its present format.
