The Australian Rally Commission (ARCom) recently considered a submission from a large group of classic rally car competitors proposing a change to the types of vehicles that could be recognised as classic rally cars. The Commission supported these changes in principle, subject to some further consultation being undertaken.
The main element of the proposal provides for the recognition of vehicles modified in accordance with the Club Rally Car regulations, and which also meet the age criterion for recognition as Classic Rally Cars being accepted in Classic competitions as a separate class. Other older vehicles that meet the spirit and intent of the classic rally car domain, could be accepted on their merits on a case by case basis.
The Commission considered that this might include some vehicles already recognised by Motor Sport New Zealand and possibly some ‘reproduction’ type vehicles. The Commission will immediately establish a committee of Classic rally competitors to advise ARCom on management and technical issues within the Classic Rally Car domain.
The Australian Rally Commission agreed in principle to establish a Classic Rally Car Championship from 2015 for vehicles that comply with the existing Classic regulations and will take advice on the format of that competition from the new advisory group.
Changes to PRC
The Commission agreed to seek advice on a proposal that from 2016 all vehicles 30 years or older be given the same modification freedoms as Club Rally Cars. The Commission noted that the effect would be to remove PRC as a separate category for 30 year old vehicles. The Commission agreed that this may provide for simplification of eligibility rules. Further consultation is to be sought.
