On July 13, the normally quiet avenues of the Maria River State Forest in NSW were awoken by the 19 entries in the UltraTune Kempsey Middle Maria Rallysprint, organised by the Kempsey Sporting Car Club.

The format consisted of two 5.5km stages which were run three times in each direction.

The eventual, and convincing winners, were Armidale’s Richard Opie and Stratford’s Kam Baker in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 4. The Coffs Harbour crew of Joel Payne and Troy Gordon were second in a Mitsubishi Galant VR4.

Gloucester’s father/daughter combination of Scott and Breanna McCloy put on a spectacular display of driving in their Datsun Stanza to finish third outright and first rear wheel drive, beating two 4WD turbo cars along the way!

Sydney’s Doug Muxlow and Col Pogson were first in Class A in a Toyota Sprinter, with local entrants Jeff Hawkins and Campbell Moody second in their Gemini.

Bernie Keast and Helena Walkden, another local crew also in a Gemini, finished 10th outright, despite losing first and second gears during their final run. Helena had a busy day, also navigating in the Toyota Corolla of Robert Tamini, the other local entrant, who finished 13th.

Ford fans were disappointed to see the Escorts of Derrick Woods and Erkki Kytola both end up on their roofs during the day. “Dekka” Woods was looking very good, setting consistent third fastest times in the morning, before his misadventure.

The Kempsey Sporting Car Club would like to thank the major sponsor of the event, UltraTune Kempsey, as well as the minor sponsors, for supporting a very successful event.
