The death has been announced of the prominent rally photographer, Masaru Miyajima, in his home country Japan. The rally world was horrified in 1992 when he was very seriously injured during an armed robbery which occurred at night while returning from a photo location during the Safari Rally on the main Mombasa to Nairobi road.
He and his colleague, Pascal Huit, had large quantities of professional equipment stolen.
While he was hiding from his assailants, their vehicle was driven over Miyajima who was lying under their Isuzu Trooper, sheltering from the robbers, and he was hospitalised for weeks before being repatriated. Only a few days earlier, Miyajima was speaking about this incident, clearing up many misunderstandings. The news of his passing comes at a critical time while FIA authorities consider the wisdom and security issue of the proposed return of the Safari Rally to the World Rally Championship. https://rallysportmag.com/safaris-wrc-candidate-rally-ends-in-chaos/
