FIA homologation of the Proton Iriz R5 car has been postponed, according to MEM’s chief Chris Mellors. “After more testing we found some improvements we want to incorporate into the specification, so we have decided to wait until July 1st, rather than rush," Mellors said.
"(Proton) had the Group A inspection last week at the factory in Malaysia for the base car, and all went well so that will be homologated ahead of the R5 car.”
A simultaneous homologation on April 1st with the Citroen C3 and the Proton Iriz will therefore not happen. The C3 is the sixth car to be homologated as an R5, after the Fiesta, Peugeot’s 208T16, Citroen DS3, Skoda Fabia and Hyundai’s NG i20. The privately built Mitsubishi Mirage was never homologated by the FIA. Mellor’s company has been entrusted by Proton with development of the Iriz at their facility in England.
