Members of the public are being invited to play a personal part in the staging of Rally Australia, Australia’s round of the World Rally Championship on the Coffs Coast of New South Wales next September.

Applications opened this week for up to 2000 volunteer jobs with a wide variety of roles in the event organisation.

They include working as sporting officials, or in spectator services, event headquarters, media operations or as courtesy car drivers.

Rally Australia General Manager Michael Masi said joining up with the volunteer team, which will be directed by Clerk of Course Dr Michelle Gatton, was a wonderful way to be part of one of Australia’s biggest international sports events this year.

“All big motorsport events, whether it’s the World Rally Championship, the Australian Grand Prix, the Bathurst 1000, or similar competitions around the world, traditionally rely on large volunteer forces to help run them,” Mr Masi said.

“Now there’s an opportunity for people, whether they are local or from farther afield, to play a part in making the visits of spectators, teams, media and officials from around the world a successful and enjoyable experience.

“As the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games showed, volunteers not only help run events but also are vital in providing a welcoming atmosphere, showcasing their country and their region and sending visitors home with good impressions.

“Our Clerk of Course Dr Michelle Gatton is looking for up to 2000 volunteers and I urge people to sign up for her team. Their contributions will be meaningful and highly valued.”

A special part of volunteering at Rally Australia will be the free officials’ after-party, which traditionally some of the international rally drivers will attend to offer their thanks.

Rally Australia, round 10 of 13 on the 2011 WRC, will be staged on 8-11 September.

Volunteer applications can be made on-line at www.rallyaustralia.com.au or by emailing officials@rallyofficials.com.au
