Rally Recall: 2002 Safari Rally Kenya

With a remarkable demonstration of controlled driving Colin McRae won his third Safari Rally in six years and forged in to the record books with a 25th World rally win.

At the wheel of an incredibly reliable Ford Focus, and with a virtually puncture-free rally on wide-section Pirelli tyres, he chose his pace at the start and kept to it.

“It was hard to do this when Tommi Makinen was in front and pulling away, but it paid off in the end,” McRae said.

Makinen retired after shock absorber troubles had earlier cost him the lead.

McRae moves to within seven points of Drivers Championship leader Marcus Gronholm who retired on the first section, while Ford are now 14 points behind Peugeot.

Karamjit Singh (Proton Pert) was the only finisher out of five entries in the Production Car world championship category, and moves in front of Ramon Ferreyros, who elected not to enter this event.
