Headway is a charity set up to give help and support to people affected by brain injury, both at a local and national level. The charity's activities include the funding of research, preventative campaigns to help stop brain injury occurring, and practical help for those already affected by brain injuries.
All the money raised by the Richard Burns Foundation at Goodwood, including donations from visitors to the Richard Burns Foundation Collection, will go to Headway Tunbridge Wells and District to help fund a housing project and therefore provide a lifeline for people whose lives have been altered by brain injury.
John Surtees, the only man to have won world titles on two wheels and four, is a supporter of Headway and will be appearing on the RBF stand on Saturday and take part in a question and answer session. His son, Henry, suffered a fatal head injury in an accident during a Formula 2 race at Brands Hatch last July.
Richard Burns, the 2001 world rally champion, died of brain cancer in 2005, exactly four years to the day after winning his title. The Richard Burns Foundation was set up as a tribute to him by his family and closest friends, aiming to provide help to people affected by brain cancer or injury.
This year the Richard Burns Foundation will have an enhanced presence at the Goodwood Festival of Speed with the Richard Burns Foundation Collection revealed to the public for the first time: a selection of Richard's personal effects that form a museum describing his life and work.
Zoe Scott, Richard's long-term girlfriend, commented: "I know that Richard would have been thrilled for us to be supporting Headway, such a great cause. Throughout his illness, Richard was always extremely concerned by how people managed to cope with life-changing disease, particularly if those people had limited funds. So he would definitely approve of the choice of charity this year, and we are all very proud to be involved."
