Dunedin rally driver Emma Gilmour has not ended her national championship season in a way she envisaged, rolling out of the Trusthouse Racetech Rally of Wairarapa in the second stage.

She and co-driver Ben Atkinson were thankfully unhurt and although Emma’s Suzuki Swift Maxi was only superficially damaged, it was unable to continue the nine-stage, 163km event.

“It was a slow speed roll, the Suzuki just stepped out on braking and as I was quite sideways into a bank it used it like a ramp and launched up and over,” Emma says.

“Putting the car on its lid was just really disappointing after everyone’s efforts this season. One positive we can take is that the engine was running great on the first stage. Although we have finished up in the NZRC, please stay tuned for some announcements about our plans later in the year”

Emma’s Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship commitments in the United States mean this was the final Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship (NZRC), driven by VINZ, round she was able to attend.

Her next GRC round is in New York on July 19-20, where she is looking forward to further racing time in her Rhys Millen Racing Hyundai Veloster Turbo.
