Last weekend's Rallye Sanremo was cancelled after floods and collapsed bridges made the rally route impassable.
The unprecedented storm that hit the hinterland of western Liguria on Friday night deposited 350mm of rain on the region, with more than 50 trees covering the route as well.
Despite working hard to try and salvage the rally, organisers were left with no option but to cancel the event.
"We would have jeopardised the lives of the pilots and we would never have accepted to do so. In addition, it is also a question of respect for the territory, given that there are families who have lost everything," organisers said.
The rally was to be the fifth round of the Italian Rally Championship.
