The FIA’s championship rule that drivers in the support WRC2 championship retain the best six scores from the first seven rallies they enter in the 14 round series has started to raise some unexpected consequences.

Me and my Driver! Szczepanak (right) with Praszek during Neste Rally Finland 2016.A ready way to identity when a driver does NOT want to score points in his name is to name the co-driver as the official driver.

This happened when the 2014 Production Car champion, Max Rendina, named his co-driver as an official driver in the 2014 Neste Oil Rally Finland.  This year Hubert Ptaszek did the same in Finland, naming the driver of his car as co-driver, Maciej Szczepaniak, but himself driving the stages.

The result was that Maciej was awarded six championship points for an event in which he did not drive.  Ptaszek retains the 42 points already accumulated on earlier events.

It is not impossible to visualise a situation in which one driver, under separate names, could win and finish second in the championship, even if it must be too late to happen this year …
