New Zealand's famed Silver Fern Rally has been dramatically reduced and has been renamed the 'Silver Frond' ahead of its November running.
The rally was originally planned to be run over seven days and 1060km of competitive stages, but the Coronavirus has put an end to that.
“With the ongoing active cases of COVID-19 around the world, it has become clear that the NZ Government will not be opening our boarders to international travellers any time soon," organisers, Ultimate Rally Group, said in a statement.
"With this in mind, we have decided the best course of action is to reduce the 2020 NZ Silver Fern Marathon Rally to a two day format now called the URG Silver Frond and focus on creating an event that can meet the domestic NZ market.
"The event will be based on the road closures we already have in place from the last two days of Silver Fern being the 27th and 28th November.”
The rally will now start in Palmerston North and finish in Taupo, with a competitive distance of just over 300km.
The next Silver Fern Rally will be held in 2022, with the rally likely to return to the South Island.
