Following a successful event in October 2006, organisers of the NZ Silver Fern International Marathon Rally are pressing ahead with plans for another event, and have completed their first step, gaining Motorsport New Zealand approval for the dates October 16–23, 2008.
The 2008 event is likely to run along similar lines to that of the 2006 event, though organisers are looking at a more compact route, encompassing a different area of New Zealand’s scenic South Island. The proposed event will again take place over seven days, with around 1000km of gravel special stages.
NZ Silver Fern Rally Chairman, Gary Smith said, “We learnt a lot first time up, and having listened to the feedback from the last event, will be making changes such as shorter overall competition days, and eliminating some of the more unpopular sections of special stage and touring roads.”
Organisers expect to release more information about their plans for the event over the coming months.
