Toyota Racing Development (TRD) Rally Team co-driver Sue Evans has won the Australian Motorsport Personality of the Year Award, becoming the first woman to ever win the publicly-decided title.

Evans defeated high-profile contenders including multiple V8 Supercar champion Mark Skaife and Formula 3 front-runner Leanne Tander to win the award organised by the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS).

The win is also the crowning achievement in a year of unprecedented success for Evans following overall victory with husband Simon in the Australian Rally Championship (ARC).

The Evans duo claimed their second and consecutive drivers' and co-drivers' titles and became the first pairing to win every heat and every round in an ARC Super Series season.

Their success and team-mate Neal Bates' second overall locked in a TRD 1-2 and also helped guide Toyota to back-to-back manufacturers' titles.

"This is the best way to end what has been an amazing year," said Evans, who joins husband Simon (2003) as a winner of the personality award.

"I went into the night thinking it would be nice to win and that it would also give Toyota a clean sweep of awards, but I thought the people nominated from circuit racing would poll stronger.

"It goes to show there are a lot of people into rallying and out there watching it and supporting our sport - which is great.

"I am also proud and honoured to be the first woman to receive the award. It highlights the growing presence of women in top-line Australian motorsport and should encourage other women to enter the sport."

Evans was announced the winner of the Motorsport Personality of the Year Award during the annual CAMS end-of-season gala awards dinner, held in Melbourne's Docklands precinct on the night of Friday, 14 December.

It was a successful night for Evans as she also collected her ARC co-drivers' champion trophy and husband Simon collected his ARC drivers' champion trophy.

Toyota also received the 2007 ARC manufacturers' winning trophy at the Docklands ceremony, adding to the title it won in 2006.
