Changing the warm weather of tropical Jakarta for the cooler climes of winter in Whangarei, the Pertamina PrimaXP Rally Team of Rifat Sungkar and Scott Beckwith will resume their 2010 Asia Pacific Rally Championship campaign in Whangarei, in the Northern part of New Zealand, this weekend 3-4 July.

Having secured third outright and second in the Asia Cup at the seasons opening event in Malaysia, the team are confident of a strong showing in New Zealand.  “We were delighted with our results in Malaysia in an aging car, and it really boosted our confidence for the remainder of the season – as well as giving us a valuable standing in the points table which we can build upon in New Zealand” said Rifat.

Having kicked off the season in a Subaru WRX, the pair return to Mitsubishi for the Whangarei event.  “We had previously committed to competing in Malaysia in the Subaru” said co-driver Scott, “but Rifat is more comfortable and really enjoys driving the Mitsubishis, so we are very pleased to have arrangements in place which will see us in a competitive Mitsubishi for the remainder of the season”

The New Zealand event is a favourite of all drivers, but will bring its own challenges.  “The roads are fantastic to drive” said Rifat.  “Well formed and maintained country roads, they are very flowing and fast – and they reward commitment.  This will advantage the local drivers who know them well, and there are at least four local crews that will be very fast here, as well as the usual APRC crews.  We will really have to on be top of our game to achieve our goal of a podium finish” he commented.

Whilst Rifat has competed in New Zealand before, it will be a new experience for Scott.  “I have long wanted to compete in New Zealand having spectated there before, and heard all the positive comments from everyone who has competed” said Scott.  “Rifat really enjoys the roads and rallying there, and so is very keen to go hard and do well – which is a great frame of mind to head into the event with.  It should be a great weekend”

The event kicks off on Saturday morning 4 July, and will comprise over 280km of challenging gravel roads in two full days of competition.

The team continues to enjoy the strong support of Pertamina, Indonesia’s largest producer and retailer of quality fuels and lubricants.  “It is great to have a sponsor like Pertamina on board” said Rifat.  “Their ongoing commitment to the team and the championship is fantastic, and their quality products like PrimaXP, which are designed for the rigorous demands of competition like rallying, are a perfect match for the teams ambitions in the APRC.”

The team is also grateful for the ongoing support of Oakley and Tag Heuer, and also welcomes the support of Bullocks Tools.
