After a successful debut in February, the future of Targa Hellyer Gorge has been secured with the signing of a new two-year deal with the Burnie City Council that ensures the event returns in 2016 and 2017.
The one-day tarmac rally on one of the state’s most iconic roads will again provide a fantastic, easy to compete in, warm up to Targa Tasmania.
Event Director, Mark Perry, is excited to secure a long-term future for Tasmania’s newest Targa event.
“We have built a great relationship with the Burnie City Council in recent years and they share our vision for Targa into the future,” Perry said.
“We recently committed to returning to Burnie for an overnight stop with Targa Tasmania, which will inject a huge amount of money into the local economy. So now signing a new two year deal for Targa Hellyer Gorge will further strengthen our relationship for the future.”
Burnie Mayor, Cr Anita Dow, sees the relationship with Targa as a win-win arrangement.
“Burnie welcomed the new Targa Hellyer Gorge event with open arms in 2015 and we are very proud to have our own Targa event that is unique to this region,” Cr Dow said.
“Targe Hellyer Gorge continues a long history of motorsport on the North West Coast and we are very excited that we will support the event for a further two years.”
Perry said the event has been designed as a compact test for driver and car.
“The slick format used in 2015 was a great success with competitors, with six runs of the Gorge completed in a matter of hours,” Perry said. “The 2016 event will be no different with a field made up of locals and mainlanders alike.
“With the 25th Anniversary Targa Tasmania to be held two months later, many competitors will grab their only chance to fine tune themselves and their cars in preparation for the biggest Targa event ever to be held, from April 11 to 16.
“It’s also the perfect event for those who want a taste of Targa before moving to multi-day events.”
