A number of tarmac events in South Australia and Western Australia have aligned to form the inaugural Tarmac Cup in an exciting prospect for tarmac rallying in the states.
Despite COVID-19 restrictions in other areas of the country, these two states have lower case numbers, hence, the ability to work together to form this new series.
"This (COVID-19) hasn't stopped us creating a partnership with our friends over the WA border and we are proud to announce the formation of the Tarmac Cup for 2020," the statement said.
There will be four events to form the initial championship, beginning with Targa South West this weekend before moving to South Australia for the MSS Safety Gorge Rallysprint in September.
Targa West and the Adelaide Rally will also be on the calendar.
Entrants are automatically eligible for points, with larger points up for grabs at the bigger Targa West and Adelaide Rally rallies. Both Challenge and Competition Categories are eligible. Further to this, travelers venturing from one state to another get points bonuses.
"We are acutely aware of the travel restrictions in place for people travelling back into WA from SA," the organisers stated.
"(Those travellers) at present need a G2G approval to re-enter without quarantine. We are hopeful of an easing of restrictions later in the year that makes this more attractive.
"At present we already have a good number of entries from WA for the Adelaide Rally in late November and are hopeful we will still see these cars take on local teams in the Adelaide Hills.
