Team Dilusi’s Kingsley Thompson is to get expert tuition from former British Rally Champion Alister McRae ahead of this week’s Rally of Otago.
Heading into round two of the New Zealand Rally Championship (NZRC), Thompson has employed the skills of the well known Scot, who will be competing in the Otago Classic Rally, to help fine tune his skills on the southern roads.
A newcomer to the event, the Team Dilusi pilot is looking to build upon an encouraging opening round of the NZRC in Hawkes Bay last month and will be out for maximum points when the rally kicks off from Dunedin on Friday night. Currently lying sixth in the Rookie standings, Thompson and co-driver Richard Ellis are certain that recent modifications to the Mitsubishi Evo X’s under-body will allow the team to push with confidence on the unfamiliar roads.
“We’re excited to be getting out and getting more miles behind the wheel,†says Thompson. “The Rally of Otago sounds like a fantastic event and we’re hoping for a good resultâ€.
With Ellis having been selected to attend the inaugural Co-drivers Academy run by the Motorsport New Zealand Scholarship Trust in Wellington this weekend, the team is focused on refining in-car techniques as well as driving style.
Topping off their rally preparation, Thompson is taking advantage of the opportunity to get acclimatised to the roads at shakedown on Thursday.
Covering 240 kilometres of Special Stages around the Otago region, the rally kicks off with a car show on Friday night and finishes with the infamous tarmac Super Stage on Sunday.
