Volkswagen are again setting the bar high for their next rally car, and if you’re across the various social media channels, you may have seen the astonishing images of the Volkswagen Polo R5 car from its recent test.

The test, however, did not go to plan, with the rear basically tearing from the car.

Volkswagen’ Motorsport’s technical director, Francois-Xavier Demaison, told Autosport.com that the reasoning behind the problem was simple.

The team were testing in a famous location for several Dakar Rally tests. Impressed yet?

“It's rougher than anything we would have seen on the Acropolis Rally. It's extreme, that's why we go there,” Demaison told Autosport.

"Being honest, we go to this place to break the car. This picture came after running the car for four days and pushing the components a long way past the point where we would have expected them to fail.”

The sheer dedication and attention to detail from their ultra successful tenure in the WRC is showing through with their R5 car.

Four days on Daker-like conditions in a standard gravel-spec car is something impressive, and an interesting experience to drive.

By focussing on reliability, its emphasising the importance of the famous rally quote - ‘to finish first, first you must finish.’

It would not be at all surprising to see the Polo on the pace of its rivals from stage one in Spain in October.
