The Queensland rally community bid a sad farewell to Helen Best on January 21, after a long illness. Helen, wife of long-time co-driver Tony Best, was a familiar face and one of the first to volunteer to assist at local and interstate events. When she was not sharing a happy smile at a control table, Helen was always supporting Tony in his regular visits to compete as a co-driver. Following the announcement, Helen was remembered fondly on social media with messages of condolence coming to Tony from all over the country. Well-known rallyists including Iain Stewart, Ross Dunkerton and Ed Ordynski all shared their best wishes in memory of a lovely lady. She rarely missed a Brisbane Sporting Car Club event in Queensland, and happily put up her hand to assist in other jurisdictions. Helen would often be seen working in an unfamiliar role on an event while Tony competed, and offered the comment that at any age you can learn and do something new, even it takes a little practice. Tony is well-known around the country as one of the most experienced rally co-drivers in Australia in all manner of rally events. While Tony’s long career statistics are often referred to as uncountable, his impeccable record-keeping places him high on the list of events competed. Helen’s funeral will be held on Thursday, February 7 at 11am, at the Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, 61 Edmund Street, Caloundra. The rally community remembers Helen fondly, and offers its thoughts and support to Tony at this difficult time.
