Back then, watching in the darkened hallway of my family home, names like Mikkola, Airikkala, Pond, McRae and Brookes were the stars as they contested highly-competitive rounds of the British Rally Championship.
Those days are long gone, but in July 2026, here I was ready to live out that childhood dream and battle the demanding pine forest roads.
It was a long way from Aussie rallying, but armed with a late-model MG, I was guided through the country lanes of Yorkshire on the way to the infamous Dalby Forest.
