Details released at a low-key presentation at the Liverpool start location of the 2019 Wales Rally GB coincided with details of the very first special stage. This is to be the mixed surface stage at Oulton Park, stated to be Britain’s ‘most picturesque’ circuit. This will be held on the Thursday evening, directly after the proceedings in Liverpool itself, mostly on the motor racing circuit, which was the site where Sir Stirling Moss scored the only four-wheel drive win in Formula 1 (1961 Gold Cup Race). Moss drove his Ferguson, the last front-engined car to win a F1 race. The rest of the rally is to be held as usual fully within Wales. Rally GB has in previous years included stages in Oulton Park, but not recently. The photo above is from a page of the contemporary Autosport magazine, and shows the 1965 RAC Rally winner, Rauno Aaltonen, in action in his Mini Cooper S, passing through Lodge Corner, which this year will be the very first corner of rally. = = = = Last weekend during the gripping Rally Sardinia, other rally highlights included Sebastien Loeb driving a Hyundai i20 World Rally Car on his local Rallue Voges Grand Est. Loeb won by over three minutes from R5 drivers, led by Yohan Rossel (Citroen C3), William Wagner (Polo) and Yoann Bonato (C3). Marcos Ligato headed a Chevrolet Agile MR 1-2 on the Argentine national Esquel Rally, held well over 1000 miles south of Buenos Aires, held in an area called the ‘place of the thistles.’ Federico Villagra had been leading, then retired three stages from the finish. Fourth round of the Czech national series was the Agrotec Petronas Rally Hustopece, won by Filip Mares’ Fabia R5, over one minute in front of the Focus WRC of Jan Dohnal. = = = = Seventeen year old Sami Pajari (above) has been voted the winner of the 2019 Flying Finn Future Stars award. The prize is a fully supported package for an entry in the JWRC category on the forthcoming Neste Rally Finland. Five years ago, the prize winner was Teemu Suninen. = = = = Coming this weekend is the 76th Rajd Polski, and one of the oldest fixtures in the sport. It celebrates the 50th time it has qualified as Poland’s round of the FIA European Rally Championship. This year, stages closer to the rally base at Mikolajki are being preferred, to make the distance of the rally shorter and the route more spectator friendly. The 103 entries are the biggest on this event since 1975. https://rallysportmag.com/r5-to-become-rally-2-in-fia-class-restructure/
