Last Saturday marked the successful return of the Canberra Rally Experience. The day saw twenty two drivers take over 300 members of the public for a ride and raise $8,700 for the Snowy Hydro South Care rescue helicopter in the process.
Among the drivers where four time Australian Rally Champion Neal Bates in his Toyota Corolla S2000, as well as rising star Brendan Reeves in his Rallyschool.com.au Subaru WRX.
Brendan is one of six drivers chosen from an international field to receive a fully paid drive in six rounds of the World Rally Championship (WRC) in 2011. The prize was financed by Pirelli and the WRC Academy and will see Reeves drive a Ford Fiesta R2 starting in Portugal in March.
The day provided a chance for members of the community to experience the thrill of being in a real rally car, while competing on one of two 5 kilometre rally stages set up in the Bluetts Forest west of Canberra. One lady was so impressed by her ride in a 4WD rally car that she donated an extra $100 to Snowy Hydro South Care helicopter after her blast through the stage.
Event director Martin Holberton said, “I’m very happy to see the return of the Canberra Rally Experience and would like to thank all the members of the public, the drivers and the volunteers who made the day a success and helped raise this funding for a valuable community asset.”
