Queenslanders Ryan and Rebecca Smart took the opportunity of NDSCC’s recent test and tune day in the Jimna forest to try out Silverstone Tyres’ latest specification tyres on their Fullerton Financial Services Lancer Evo 6.

The team are planning to contest the Rally of Canberra for the first time and needed to work out a tyre strategy.

NDSCC found an excellent 7km stage with a variety of conditions – fast and twisty sections with a rocky stretch in the middle – not dissimilar from the stages expected at Canberra.

After finishing second outright in the opening round of the KCF Rallysprint series, Ryan wanted to have a test before entering the Rally of Canberra.

“I wanted to try these 525i Silverstones,” said Ryan, “and they impressed me with good grip levels across all the conditions. That gives me more confidence going into Canberra.”

Alan Stean, from Silverstone Tyres, was on hand for the test and said the S525i, with its Kevlar Aramid sidewall, offers more protection for challenging stages.

“Ryan used medium softs today, but for Rally of Canberra we will look to use mediums,” he said.

Also testing for ROC were Bruce Fullerton and Hugh Reardon-Smith in their Evo 6, after having an engine rebuild over summer. Both Fullerton Financial Services entries will be entered at the 2008 ROC.
