This Saturday, September 30, sees classic rallying move to the northern NSW town of Wauchope when the Hastings Sporting Car Club hosts the BAGO 100. The rally is also a round of the NSW Novice and Northern Rally series, as well as the HVSCC Ladies cup, and the HVSCC Classic Challenge.
The mid north coast of NSW will be very well supported with competitors in the classic field which is headed by the Wauchope crew of Michael Boaden and Helen Cheers in their Ford Escort RS. This is the car they used to win the Cerberus Classic Rally held in the Yarra Ranges just out of Melbourne earlier this year.
The Boadens, who are also currently leading the NSW Rally Championship in their Mitsubishi Evo and who are the odds-on favourites to win the title for the second year in a row will be using the Escort as Course Car in the Bago event. The car is very spectacular, and Michael and Helen are one of the quickest rally crews in the country at the moment, which should make for a great spectacle.
The other notable entrant in the classic section comes from the husband and wife pairing of Troy and Penny O’Doherty in their Triumph TR7 V8. The Triumph is a brand new car they have constructed, and was built almost entirely by Troy and Mal Keough.
These two guys have a huge amount of experience in motor sport, and in particular have been big supporters of local area motor sport for many years. In a strange twist of circumstance, the original car was purchased from Michael Boaden’s father, Les, some years ago.
It has taken Troy and Mal nearly two years to build this car, and the amount of detailed work is fantastic. Troy and Penny are also the major backers of the team, through their Coffs Harbour- based earth moving business. To them, the weekend is a real family affair, with their two young sons coming along to supply encouragement to mum and dad.
There will be a large variety of cars on display opposite the Bago Tavern in Wauchope from around 10am on Saturday, including a Fiat 131 Abarth, various Datsuns and many more. The rally is due to start at 2.30pm. Spectators are more than welcome to come and look at the vehicles. Â
There will also be a display from EventX Productions of all their motoring DVDs and tapes, as well as a showing of some exciting rally footage.
The event could not be run without the fantastic support of the members of the HSVCC, and backing from the Bago Winery and the Wauchope RSL Club.
