Building on the momentum established last year after swapping from a 1972 Toyota Corolla to a fresh new Hyundai Excel, Coppin will contest the NSW Excel Rally series, as well as heading for the National Excel Cup to be held in conjunction with the Victorian ARC round at the end of the year.
Coppin finished his final event last year, a round of the NSW State Championship in 8th place outright and 1st 2wd. This result was the culmination of steady improvements during his debut season.
“I had a sensational season last year but I’m not getting ahead of myself,” Coppin said. “I need to gain experience on a variety of events and different roads as well as measure myself against some of the front runners in the Excel series before I get to cocky about championships,” he said.
The team will compete in the Appliance Installations Rally in Canberra towards the end of March, as a shakedown for the year ahead.
“The guys from Total Traction Services have been working hard over the summer season and we’ve made a few changes to the car that we need to test,” team engineers Michael & Thomas Barrett said.
The team will also be testing a new GPS based tracking system that will reveal vital data on the cars performance through each stage, thanks to sponsor Sennell.com.au.
If everything goes as planned and he steps up to the challenge, Coppin is hoping to be at the front end of the Excel series come the final round in October.
