Peter Brock's co-driver, Mick Hone, said from his hospital bed today that he believed Brock did nothing wrong before their car left the road and hit a gum tree, killing the nine-times Bathurst winner.

“The car just got out of shape and he couldn't correct it in time,” Hone told news service AAP.

Hone, who was injured in the crash, said Brock was turning two consecutive sharp left corners and on the second one the car “just started to slide”.

“Pete tried to correct it but we just slid off the side of the road and basically collected the biggest gum tree there,” he said.

“We knew what was happening, we could see it coming.”

Hone, who received two broken ribs and a fractured pelvis in the accident, said there was an “almighty bang” and the windscreen shattered and showered glass over them.

Hone held Brock's hand and tried to get a response, but there was none.

He said he believed Brock was killed instantly.
