The winner of five Australian Rally Championships, Ross Dunkerton, will get to see and drive a rally car he first drove in 1989, Rally Retro Festival this Saturday. The Mitsubishi Galant VR4 built by Ralliart Australia in 1989 for the Australian round of the World Rally Championship in Western Australia was driven by Ross Dunkerton and co-driver Steve McKimmie. Outright rally success came a year later for Dunkerton in this car, with co-driver Mick Harker, winning the FAI Rally of Canberra. The Mitsubishi Galant VR4 has undergone a restoration in recent months by owner, Stuart Bowes, returning the car to its original Group A specification. Dunkerton will drive the car for the first time in 30 years on the short rally demonstration track at Rally Retro Festival. Grand Marshall of the event is the 1990 Australian Rally Champion, Ed Ordynski, who also rallied a Galant VR4 in 1991. Ordynski will flag the cars away on the demonstration runs from 11:00 am. It’s not only iconic and rare rally car that will be on display. In all the organisers expect 11 Australian Champions to attend, covering championship wins from 1970 to 2011. The venue opens to the public at 10:00 am and the cars take to the track from around 11:00 am at the METEC Driver Education Centre, 112 Colchester Road, Bayswater North.
