Leigh Hynes and Stuart Percival’s win at the weekend’s Newmont Boddington Gold Rally will go down in WA rallying history. The Busselton Rally Sport pair flew over blind crests in their Subaru WRX, in the rain, at an average of 134 kilometres/hour.
Hynes and Percival were locked in an impassioned fight with former Australian Rally Championship competitor Nicholas Box (Mitsubishi Evo IV) who had an eight second lead heading into the second last stage.
That’s when Hynes pulled out all stops: “You think you’re going as fast as you can but then you find another five per cent.”
“It was amazing we haven’t had that kind of fight for a long time.”
Percival labelled Hynes’ commitment as ‘inspirational’ and said: “I haven't seen Leigh drive like that in ages.”
“The last stage was four minutes of heart-in-your throat, pure speed.”
Earlier in the day, when Box had a 20 lead over the boys, Hynes and Percival’s game plan had been to concentrate on taking second place.
But the pair seized the opportunity to go for the win when Box had an off-road adventure.
The Busselton Rally Sport team won the Newmont Boddington Gold Rally by eight seconds and put on a spectacular show for the hundreds of spectators who gathered to see the famous jumps and water splash of former Rally Australia stages.
Hynes said the victory was a testament to the strong partnership between him and Percival who have a synchronicity unmatched by other teams.
The win, which puts the reigning WA Rally Champions on top of the 2014 leaderboard, was also reward for loyal sponsors including the guys from True Blue Alarms.
