Saturday evening's Motorsport Australia awards saw John McCarthy crowned both Australian and Asia-Pacific Rally Champion co-driver. McCarthy, who has been co-driving for Harry Bates since 2015, received the awards at the annual awards gala dinner in Melbourne. A long time competitor in the Australian Rally Championship alongside the likes of Stephen Shepheard and Matt van Tuinen, McCarthy broke through with Bates for a clean sweep of the national title in 2019. McCarthy was crowned APRC champion co-driver despite not competing in the Chinese final. Both Bates and McCarthy will no doubt be looking to continue on their fine form in 2020. Although plans to compete in the Junior World Rally Championship were shelved, both will compete in a full season of the Australian Rally Championship with Toyota, while also getting a chance to compete at the APRC final on home soil in November.
