Sources in Japan have suggested that any further Mitsubishi World Rally Car projects will be based on the Colt hatchback, possibly in the S2000 format.

Katsuo Terao, a seniot executive officer of Mitsubishi, has hinted that his company should be back in the WRC but as yet no decision has been made.

According to a report in the British Motorsport News, Terao belives that as long as the company has funds for development, they can produce a suitable car, but admitted that the company would have to brush up on its technology concerning environmental issues first.

The Colt would appear to be an ideal base for an S2000 project as its wheelbase is similar to that of the class-winning Peugeot 207. It is likely that the project would proceed if the World Motor Sport Council approves the S2000 regulations from the start of 2010. Terao is known to be sympathetic to the WRC.
