On the same weekend when only two crews scored Middle East Rally Championship points, only four crews finished the opening African championship rally.
This was on the Bandama Rally in Ivory Coast, and no crews scored championship points. Â
Reigning champion, Gary Cheynes, retired with engine trouble and the oil pump was damaged on a heavy landing. The winner was Morifere Soumahoro in an Evo X (pictured).
Memories linger on in Africa. Forty five years ago NO crews finished the 1972 Bandama Rally, an event which then progressed, and for 15 years was a qualifying round of the FIA world championship. Â
On that occasion the late Shekhar Mehta, with guest co-driver Andy Dawson, were reported to be the last crew still running. Â - Martin Holmes
